Red Hat chases Redmond with HPC play • The Register

But to say that Red Hat chases Redmond is not exactly right. It is more of Redmond chasing after the Linux HPC market.

I have seen the new Windows HPC Server 2008 and I must say it is very nicely done with good integration of management and monitoring tools. But what they have delivered in Windows HPC Server 2008 is what the Linux HPC market has since 2006; GUI based heat-maps? alerts? monitoring? - been there, done that!

Today, both the Windows and Linux crowd have the same set of tools and utilities to build and manage a cluster.

The real chase starts now in making clusters easier for the end-users (not the system integrators, hardware suppliers or cluster administrators).

This is where I feel the Linux crowd needs to pull together and work closely as a team. Microsoft's Visual Studio (VS) is a formidable opponent and with tight integrations of parallel tools into VS, it will give rise to a new generation of programmers who would be highly productive in the Windows world.

Have a good weekend!
