Default Platform's OCS v5 on VMware?

Has anyone managed to get OCS version 5 installed on a VMware VM? When attempted, the install hangs at loading the mptspi driver, towards the very beginning.

I am running XP 32-bit has the host, VMware Server v2 with 4G of RAM, and 1G dedicated to the VM.

If anyone has been successful, what were the settings/steps taken to to this?

    Thanks!

    Hi,

Did you select Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 for the guest operating system type?

Also, what architecture is OCS 5 for?

    Regards,
    Liming

Default Platform's OCS v5 on VMware?

    Hi ShadowAce,

Would you happen to know which build number you are trying out? I am
aware of certain revisions that have problems on VMware.

Default Platform OCS Install on VBMware

Thank you for replying. I appreciate it.

    ltsai--
Yes, I did select RHEL 5 as the guest OS when setting up the VM. OCS is built for the x86 architecture.

    George--
Unfortunately I do not know the build number. Is that displayed during the install? The only thing I see on the install discs is version 5.1

I will say one thing that may be affecting me. I am running VMware Server 2.0 (browser-based) on a 32-bit XP host. The OCS install discs are for a 64-bit OS. While I would not have tried this with earlier versions of VMware, I have been told that it is now possible to run 64-bit guests on 32-bit hosts.

What is your understanding of the 32-bit/64-bit disparity?

Yes, it is possible to install the 64bit OCS onto a vm instance as long as the host machine has the Intel VT-x or AMD-V virtualization. For Intel VT-x, it needs to be turned on in the BIOS setting.

With VT turned on, you then need to set the Guest Operating System as Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 64bit.

OK, I rebooted my laptop, and checked the virtualization setting. It was turned on, as I remembered. I had the the guest OS to be RHEL 5 64-bit.

So it looks like the issue is with the particular build version I have, as indicated by George Goh earlier. I will research that and report back here.

It is version 5.1, "Dell Edition".

Yes--I am running it in a VM on a Dell Laptop.

The OCS Dell edition has dell drivers that will only work on certain certified Dell hardware. The mptspi will hang in a vmware. This is a known issue with the drivers.

Ahh, OK. I was hoping the "Dell Edition" wasn't affecting anything upon initial boot, but rather affected the building of the compute nodes and their images.

Are there any plans, that you are aware of, to correct this issue?
